The project “Bulgarian Municipalities Working Together to Improve Ambient Air Quality” (LIFE-IP Clean Air) is an integrated project within the meaning of REGULATION (EU) No 1293/2013 on the establishment of a Programme for the Environment and Climate Action (LIFE).
Nature of Integrated Projects (IP)
Integrated projects implement, on a large territorial scale (regional, multi-regional, national or transnational), environmental or climate strategies or plans required by specific EU legislation. They ensure the involvement of stakeholders and promote the mobilisation and coordination of at least one additional appropriate source of funding from the Union, at national level, or from the private sector.
Focus, Objective and Instrument
LIFE-IP Clean Air is aimed at implementing the Air Quality Programmes of Sofia Municipality, Burgas Municipality, Ruse Municipality, Stara Zagora Municipality, Veliko Tarnovo Municipality and Montana Municipality.
The main objective of the integrated project is to improve air quality in these six municipalities.
The main instrument for achieving this objective is the development and implementation of a scheme for transitioning households to alternative heating solutions in the six municipalities. The scheme includes replacing wood and coal heating with pellet heating, gas heating, or connection to district heating systems.
Budget and Duration
- Duration: 6 years – from October 2018 to October 2024.
- Project budget: EUR 16.7 million.
- Financial contribution from the European Commission: 60%.
